It’s starting to get colder and colder outside and you finally want to get real about buying a stove or fireplace. There are many different options at Trimline Fires, including electric, gas, wood or pellet. In this article, we will compare the wood stove and pellet stove and show you which one fits best in different situations. Read on quickly and find out everything you need to know!

Efficiency and heat output

A pellet stove is generally more efficient than a wood-burning stove. For example, most pellet stoves have an efficiency of over 80%. The Trimline Woody Loft Pellet even has an efficiency of 89.4%.

A wood stove is almost always less efficient than a pellet stove, sometimes even more than a quarter. With Trimline Fires’ wood-burning stoves, the differences are much smaller, as all models have an efficiency of 80%. In addition, the wood stove can heat a room quickly and intensely with its direct radiant heat.

Environmental impact

Burning wood is a CO2-neutral process. This is because wood is a renewable source of energy, provided it is obtained in a sustainable way. The amount of oxygen produced by a tree is roughly equal to the amount of CO2 released when burning the wood from the same tree.

Effectively, then, this is CO2 neutral. Pellets are made from wood waste, so this too is an environmentally conscious choice.

Atmosphere and flame pattern of the stove

A wood stove is known as authentic and traditional, because of its impressive flames and the atmosphere that comes with them. With a pellet stove, the flame pattern is a lot quieter and smaller, but quite consistent. When ambience is the main consideration, the choice of a wood-burning stove is often made.

Ease of use, maintenance and cleaning

A pellet stove is easy to refill with a scoop, at the top of the appliance. In addition, the combustion can be regulated with a remote control. The burnt pellets end up as ash in the ash drawer, which is easy to empty. A pellet stove also produces few by-products, as combustion is highly efficient. All in all, this makes the pellet stove a hugely user-friendly option.

Costs: Purchase and Fuel

There is generally a reasonable difference between the cost of a wood-burning stove and a pellet stove. For instance, a wood-burning stove is cheaper to buy. However, firing a pellet stove is cheaper due to two factors. Pellets often cost less than wood and pellet stoves are more efficient. When firing with wood, it is also important to consider the type of wood, Trimline Fires recommends firing with oak, maple, cherry and birch wood.
